New Members Welcome!

The Berkeley Hiking Club was created in 1924 with the intent to draw together, in mutual consideration, persons interested in hiking to develop an appreciation of the out-of-doors, to foster the preservation and extension of nature and to offer satisfying recreational activities in beautiful settings in the Bay Area.

For many years, the Club published regular Sunday hike schedules for members. Currently, Sunday hikes are only available when members offer to lead a hike, and the hike information is communicated in advance via an email list which members can join. This email list is the primary means of communication within the Club. Sunday hikes in the Bay Area vary in length and level of difficulty but are typically moderate. Each person provides his or her own lunch and liquids. Beginning hikers or those having questions should contact the leader before hand.

Hikes depart with car pools from the corner of Shattuck Avenue and Berkeley Way promptly at the time indicated at the beginning of the hike description. In advance of the hike, please contact the leader indicating that you are coming, whether you need a ride, if you are driving, if you are a new hiker and if you prefer to meet the Group at the trailhead instead.

For further information regarding Sunday hikes, contact Erika St John at 510-548-0129 or

Many Club members also take advantage of the wide variety of other Sunday hiking offerings from other Bay area organizations (see the link below to an array of options).

Club members also organize hiking outings in the spring, summer and fall in various locations, typically in Northern California. For example, past outings have been held at: Pinnacles National Monument, Big Sur, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, Lake Tahoe, Lassen Volcanic National Park and many other beautiful spots. Spring and fall outings are held over a long weekend; summer outings are a full week long, typically at the end of July. Various guided hike options (mini, midi and maxi hikes) are available everyday during most outings.

Members in good standing are welcome to participate in the outings on the condition that they be willing to: arrange their own transportation and accommodations (suggestions are always provided); contribute to the late afternoon social hour and assist with set up and clean up as needed; take full responsibility for their readiness and ability to do the hikes without assistance and at a reasonable pace. A list of outing participants is provided to those attending.

A $10.00 outing fee is required per person, payable in advance at the time of registration for the outing.

Membership is open to all persons interested in hiking in the Bay Area. Current members include people from all walks of life, including seniors. Annual dues are $10, and $3 for each additional adult family member. The membership year is January 1 through December 31.
